Forest Xi Zhu received the B.E. (Hons.) and PhD from University of Hertfordshire (UH), Hertfordshire, UK, in 2005 and 2008, respectively. He is currently a Associate Professor with the School of Electrical & Data Engineering, Faculty of Engineering & IT, University of Technology Sydney, NSW, Australia. Dr Zhu was a winner of Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) in 2016.

His research activities mainly involve in the areas of analogue/mixed-signal, radio-frequency (RF) and mm-wave integrated circuits and systems designs. He has co-authored over 80 refereed publications in the above-mentioned fields.

Abstract: Recent works in millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) integrated circuits (ICs) design, especially the silicon-based ones, have come a long way. Lower power consumption and higher operation frequency come as a natural consequence of shrinking semiconductor feature size. This has been lasting for 40 years and known as Moore’s Law for complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. It is clear that today’s CMOS-based ICs and manufacturing processes are increasingly unsustainable. To further enhance the performance of mm-Wave IC designed in silicon-based technology, the potential of passive components has to be further explored.

In this presentation, five design examples will be given to demonstrate how to effectively improve the performance of silicon-based mm-Wave ICs using a “passive-inspired” design approach along with Keysight ADS tools. It will cover not only the design of passive components, such as miniaturized bandpass filters (BPFs), but also linear and non-linear circuits that use novel passive structures to fulfill different design specifications.
